He offered her his hand to shake.
Her gaze went from his face to his hand and back again, mouth agape and laughter trying to ease the seriousness of the conversation.
He repeated his previous statement. He said, ‘Repeat after me, “I’m going to drive every day until I leave for YWAM.'”
The girl couldn’t believe her ears. She highly disliked driving. It caused her fear, anxiety, and some tears. And now her Dad wanted her to drive every day?
His words echoed in her mind. “You will never overcome your fear if you don’t try. It will just keep getting worse.”
“It’s hard isn’t it?” Dad said in the present, his hand still extended.
“Yeah.” She blubbered.
Other words were uttered, then she shook his hand. She almost felt like she was being condemned because it was final. She would drive every day.
She was ashamed of her dreadful tears as they formed in her eyes. This fear repulsed her.
But after a few moments her Dad stood in front of her again and offered his hand. “I will run everyday until you go to YWAM.” He said.
The girl’s heart grew lighter. He was going to do it with her. He disliked running as much as she disliked driving.
She offered him a grateful smile and they shook hands again.
That had been me and my step-Dad almost two weeks ago. And you know what? We are both getting better at the things we dislike!
Fear still tries to consume me when I’m driving, but I remember that the Lord is always with me.
2 Chronicles 16:9 says, “For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.” (NIV)
Remember that whatever you fear, does not define you. It is dirt on your pants, not a permanent stain.
View fear as something to overcome and conquer. It has NO right to entangle you in its chains.
